The Modern Girl's Guide to Magic (Charming Cove #1) by Linsey Hall

The Modern Girl's Guide to Magic by Linsey Hall
My Rating: ★★★★

Aria has spent her life as a failure of a witch. Those closest say she’s powerful, but she’s never been able to control her magic. Things always go wrong, and that’s why she left Charming Cove. Several lost jobs in the big city later, Aria’s grandma turns up with one hell of an idea: come back home and join the local competition. If she wins, she gets a magical nursery and saves her family's business, Seaside Spells, in the process. The problem? Her magic always ends in disaster, and she’s competing against her sexy millionaire crush and greatest foe. Aria is worried sick that she’s going to let everyone down.

I absolutely loved this book. While I liked the second book in the series, the leads lack chemistry and it doesn’t read as a romance to me. However, Aria and Callan’s story is the exact opposite. They had a lot of chemistry from the start, and they are characters who would work great as friends or as a couple. Plus, the romance slowly builds up from the start, and we see these two characters slowly fall in love as the chapters speed by. They’re a really sweet couple and I love how their relationship develops through the story.

Of course, we follow Aria and Callan through their rotating perspectives. They briefly met once before, and it ended in total disaster when Callan turned a special place into a blooming business. I understand why Aria is upset. Once it was full of people, her grandfather’s spirit stopped visiting. Though, it’s funny that it turns out there was a lack of communication all along, not that it would’ve changed things! I really like that these two characters slowly fall into a smooth and open line of communication. Aria comes a long way in being willing to listen, and Callan is at a point in his life where he’s not hell bent on turning everything into a business opportunity. They turned out to be a great couple, and I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed the story.

There’s a great cast of characters. Then there’s the competition, which is an absolute delight. I looked forward to every stage of the competition so I could see what the challenges were as well as how they would bring Aria and Callan together. Plus, there’s Aria’s familiar, Boris. He was absolutely hilarious and very lovable! This book has made me excited to check out the third book in the series.
