Barbarian's Hope (Ice Planet Barbarians #10) by Ruby Dixon

Barbarian's Hope by Ruby Dixon
My Rating: ★★★★

Asha was disappointed when she resonated to Hemalo. She was used to a lot of attention from the extrovert men in their tribe, so she was disappointed that her khui chose such an introvert. Asha eventually decided her khui was right to choose Hemalo, and they could’ve had a happy life together, but then tragedy struck. Their one and only kit was born too soon and died hours later. The loss tore them apart from the inside out. When they resonate again, Asha is about to discover if they can ever repair their relationship.

I’ve been loving this series, so I was really excited that Asha finally got her own book. I thought that this was going to be the first book that doesn’t have a human protagonist, so imagine my surprise when Claire’s first chapter popped up. It was clear that Claire’s chapters were meant to break up how sad Asha and Hemalo’s story begins. They are both full of intense grief from the loss of their daughter. Meanwhile, Claire’s focused on doing a multi-day Secret Santa of sorts. Unfortunately, her chapters ended up feeling super out of place.

I would’ve liked it more if we saw Claire and Asha’s friendship develop through Asha’s perspective than for Claire to have an entire plot point. Her chapters felt more like short story that got squished into the book. I do appreciate that the author confirmed why she felt the need to add Claire at the end, though. I was feeling a little iffy about her having a little mystery on her hands at one point since it was kind of taking away from Asha’s story. I had to remember that it was likely meant to do that, and the author’s note confirmed that!

Asha hasn’t always appeared in the best light in previous books, but it was clear that she was hurting before it was confirmed that she was. It was great to finally get to follow her because we got to see more of what we were being let in on during Maddie’s book. We also didn’t see a whole lot of Hemalo, and he’s a quiet guy, so it was great to finally get to know him. I really like both of them, so I’m glad they got a heartfelt story full of healing and coming out of the depths of grief.
