Barbarian's Heart (Ice Planet Barbarians #9) by Ruby Dixon

Barbarian's Heart by Ruby Dixon
My Rating: ★★★

Stacy had a rough start to life on Not-Hoth, but things changed when she resonated with Pashov. Everything fell into place and she was happy until the Not-Hothquake changed everything. Not only is she and her tribe homeless, but she almost lost Pashov when he was nearly crushed to death. While Pashov is physically well, his last memories are from before Stacy and the other humans were dumped on Not-Hoth. He doesn’t remember her or their son, and for Stacy, it feels like she’s lost her husband and best friend anyway. It hurts to see Pashov look at her like a stranger, and now she’s starting over fresh as a single mother… or is she?

I was really excited to start this book, especially because we’ve got a whole ancient village that was discovered. What a game changer! Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see much of the village, but that doesn’t change the fact that this is a great book. This time around, we follow Stacy and Pashov as they struggle after the Not-Hothquake. Pashov has lost two years of his memory, and while he knows that he has a life and family with Stacy, he can’t remember any of it for the life of him. It was really sad seeing the two of them struggle, especially with the lack of communication that was going on for a good portion of the book.

I really sympathized with Stacy for a good number of chapters, but after a while, I just wanted someone to tell Stacy that pushing Pashov away isn’t doing either of them any favors. I totally understand that her situation is extremely difficult. Being homeless and traveling quite a distance to a new location certainly doesn’t help things, but she needed to put some effort in instead of snapping and crying every time Pashov’s memories didn’t mysteriously return every time he saw her. I ended up feeling more bad for Pashov than her because the poor dude was trying and she was busy being sad and angry instead of making an effort too.

I ended up really loving Pashov from the start. He definitely ranks high on the list of characters from favorite to least favorite! He’s such a caring and funny guy who is always willing to listen and learn. His chapters were my favorite, and I wish the book put more focus on people trying to talk some sense into both him and Stacy and not just Pashov. That said, I really enjoyed the book and watching the two of them fall in love again all over again. Okay, we never saw them fall in love the first time, but we know they were super in love and it was really sweet to see them find love again!
